History of Computer Games

It was all started with a first computer game that was developed in 1961 by MIT students, Martin Graetz and Alan Kotok which was supported by MIT employee Steve Russel. They developed a game called Spacewar! on a PDP-1 computer which was used for statistical calculations. Early personal computer(PC) games were often text adventures or interactive fiction where the player communicates with the computer by pressing keys on the keyboard. The text-adventure game which was developed by Will Crowther in 1976 on a PDP-11 named Adventure was the first ever text-adventure game in the world. It was later then expanded by Don woods in 1977. As time goes on, personal computers continue to become more powerful therefore at the same time people demand for better games. By 1980, graphics was beginning to become one of the most important factor in games. Textual command games was later combined with basic graphics as seen in SSI Gold Box games, Pool Of Radiance nd Bard's Tale. As time passes, many companies saw a business opportunity in the world of gaming. Many companies in 1983 created many games which were poor-quality causing the game market to crash but the crash in the market were limited to console market, as established companies such as Atari posted record losses over subseqent years. As the adoption of computer mouse started to increase, new games such as wolfestein 3D was released by ID software in 1992 which caught the eye of the market and made a big hit. Wolfenstein 3D was widely regarded as the first person shooter game in the world. With the rise of microsoft windows in 1995 and success of 3D console such as Super Mario 64 sparked great interest in accelerated 3D graphics on pc and soon resulted in attempts to produce affordable solutions with ATI Rage, Matrox Mystique and Silicon Graphics ViRGE. Tomb Raider, which was released in 1996. Personal computers continue to become more and more powerful and the demand for better games was higher than ever before.
