Over the past year, Dell is well known for producing some of the best PDAs on the market like the Dell Axim X30 series. The company is now out with the new Dell Axim X51 series. It has plenty of new features but has almost the same design as the Dell Axim X50 series. The Dell Axim X51 series comes with various prices. A high-end X51v costs $499, the middle-of-the-road Dell Axim X51 for $399 and entry-level Dell Axim X51 for only $299

Design

The dimensional design of this device is (4.7 by 2.9 by 0.7inches) and weighs 6.2 ounces. It is a very solid device and gives users comfort to hold the Dell Axim X51 as it has a rubberized backside cover. You will be able to enjoy sharp text and images as it has a 640x480 pixel resolution and a 16-bit-colour output.Users will find this better with the wide display of 3.7inch VGA screen.

This device is easily handled with a four-way navigation toggle with a center select button. However, users with bigger fingers will find it a little difficult to navigate.Other than the shortcut keys on the front of the phone, there is a hold button to prevent unecessary battery drain if it is accidently activated. You will also find a 3.5mm jack headphones, dual CompactFlash and SD expansion slots and the stylus.

Features

The Dell Axim X51v maintains the 624MHz Intel Xscale PXA270 processor and the Intel 2700G graphics engine. Also there's still 16MB of dedicated video memory and 64MB of SDRAM. Dell has improved the flash ROM from 128MB to 256MB, 192MB which is accesible by users. With the addition of Windows Mobile 5, the new Office Mbile Suite that includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and Powerpoint Mobile is now available.

This device comes with a built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi which can run simultaneously. Dell Axim X51v includes a bundle of useful softwares such as the Battery Pack Lite, Resco File Explorer, Picture viewer and Calligrapher. The Battery Pack Lite is commendable as it displays all the useful information (battery life, memory status, screen brightness) on the main display. Users need not go through various menus to refer to the information. There are also games installed in the X51v. Some of them are Geo Rally EX and Toy Golf.

After running tests on the X51v, there is a sluggish and delayed response when multiple applications were running in the background. The battery lasted for more than 4 hours when playing a looped video clip. The battery is considered long lasting but not spectacular. The strong point of the X51v is the wireless performance. The built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked perfectly as it connects very easily.

Sony Playstation Portable (PSP)

The PlayStation Portable or PSP is a handheld gaming and media playing console made by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released on the 11th of May 2004, at a Sony press conference. The system was released earlier in Japan on 12th of December 2004 and later in North America on 24th of March 2005 and lastly the PAL region on 1st September 2005. It is the first handheld video game system to use an optical disc format.

On 11th July 2007, a new version of the PSP, known also as the Slim and Lite, was released. Later on in September 2007, the PSP with different colors and box packaging was released in the US, Europe and Japan. Of these versions, three of them were displayed exclusive at the E3 2007 convention.

The original idea for the PSP was by Shin'ichi Ogasawara. It was designed for Sony Computer Entertainment which is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation. The product was from Japan, but in order to cut costs, Sony farmed the PSP production to other manufacturers, such as China. The current unit measures 170 mm (6.7 inches) in length, 74 mm (2.9 inches) in width, and 23 mm (0.9 inches) in depth, and has a mass of 280 grams (a weight of 0.62 lb) including the battery. The Samsung (previously Sharp) branded TFT LCD screen measures 110 mm (4.3 in) diagonal with a 16:9 ratio and a 480×272 pixel resolution capable of 16.77 million colors. It has four brightness settings, the brightest of which is disabled in the older firmware versions unless on A/C power.

The PSP uses a Universal Media Disc format. This technology, however, lowers battery life by up to 10% and has been said to slow down transfer speeds, making some game's load times up to two minutes in total. For this, the manufacturers improved and redesigned Slim & Lite PSP to enhance the loading time.

HP iPaq rx3715

Contents Of The Handheld Have Been Removed
To Protect The Privacy Of Members Of GVC 07-15

Unlike previous iPaq designs, the HP iPaq rx3715 is unique and looks distinct from its predecessors. A dark-grey case with black accents is used to replace the trademark silver of other iPaq products. The phone measures 4.5 by 2.8 by 0.6 inches and weighs 5.6 ounces. Although it may be a little short of small or light, that is compensated by its dual form of wireless communication and superb camera.

The device uses a 3.5-inches transflective TFT screen, with a resolution of 240x320 pixels, which produces bright and sharp images. The downside of this device is that the manufacturers did not opt for a Video Graphics Array, VGA (640x480) display which can deliver a better photo and video viewing experience.

Below the display screen are four programmable buttons. There is a very small directional pad inscribed with tiny icons for various functions located in the middle the keypad. The left side of the device has a button to activate the camera. The camera lens is located at the back of the phone, just above the battery and there is also a small mirror for taking self-portraits. The device runs on a replaceable lithium-ion battery. At the top of the device is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an infrared port, SDIO/MMC slot and the power button. Above the front screen are two Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights. One is for indicating battery power when it blinks amber and green for other alerts. The other LED is a blue light is used to show that if Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other connections are available. A slipcover is included in the device to protect it.

The rx3715 is very responsive in terms of performance. This handheld can still be quick even with multiple applications running at the same time. The rx3715 is also splendid in terms of video performance. When under the sunlight, the bright screen makes games, movie clips and web pages look sharp. However, the strongest point in the rx3517 is the extremely long battery life. The rx3715 can sustain up to 8.5 hours of usage, even with the device playing a movie clip with sound on repeatedly and the backlight at High setting. So, we can expect longer battery life in general usage. This is almost double the battery life of its former leader, the 312MHz Dell Axim X30..

Garmin iQue M5

The Garmin iQue M5 looks like the Palm OS iQue 3600 when its bottom-mounted leather screen cover is flipped up. However, the 3600 has a screen of 3.8 inches which is 15% larger than the iQue M5's 3.5 inches screen. The M5 weighs 5.9 ounces and has the dimensions of 2.8 by 5.0 by 0.8 inches. The M5's 3.5inches screen has 320x240 pixels transflective screen which can display 64,000 colours and is very bright indoors. The downside of this device's display is that it is quite hard to visualize the image on screen while outdoors and under sunlight.

In terms of features, the Garmin iQue M5 is powered by a 416MHz Intel PXA272 XScale processor, and a 64MB of ROM and RAM. The Garmin has 15MB of “safe storage” for backing data incase there's a need for hard reset. The PDA uses Windows Mobile 2003 SE application for its software and a special Garmin's GPS-specific Que programs. A noteworthy feature is the Sprite Backup for backing up data to a memory card.

The Garmin has very good performance and one of the quickest units which runs with Intel's 416MHz PXA272 XScale processor. However, the device slows down considerably when multiple applications are operated together. The iQue M5 also shows great performance as a GPS device. The device gives spot-on navigation and consistent and precise driving directions. The Garmin's map data is quite up to date, but not the same can be said about the POI database, which is out of date about a year's time.

In terms of battery life, the Garmin iQue M5 is quite decent. With backlight set to high and a looped video clip played, the device managed to survive for 4.4hours. Although the battery may not be up to expectations, we should be able to get better time in between battery charges for normal daily use.

HP iPaq rx1950

The iPaq rx1950 has sleek design and practicality, such as the curved bottom makes it easy to slip into a pocket or bag when in a rush. The PDA weighs 4.4 ounces and is 0.6 by 2.8 by 4.5 inches in dimension. The rx1950 is very travel friendly because of its small AC charger and cables. The HP iPaq rx1950 uses a 3.5 inches Quarter Video Graphics Array (QVGA) screen that displays 240x320 resolutions on screen. It has 65,536 colours which is rich and bright enough for various uses. A user friendly feature is that we can go between the portrait and landscape view by just holding down the Calendar button. Above the display are the power switch, and two small LED that shows battery status, alerts and wireless connectivity.

Running on Windows Mobile 5 operating system for its software, the HP iPaq rx1950 has many features, such as updates of mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Internet Explorer, and PowerPoint. This PDA has the HP's Image Zone software which can be used to set up slide shows, display images and also has a colour histogram. HP included some utilities such as Pocket Panel Lite which allows users to check their PDA's battery life, available memory, and backlight settings from the main screen.

With the ARM-based SC32442 processor by Samsung, the device's 300MHz clock speed is deceptive. The device can actually compete with faster Intel-based PDAs, and the CPU, which is merely the size of a thumbnail, has many extras like the flash-memory controller and is designed to decrease lag by grouping all important equipment in 1 unit. The PDA has 96MB of onboard memory, 64MB of ROM and 32 MB of SDRAM. There is also 33MB of stashed key data for persistent storage areas, incase of the battery failing. All together, the device is great but users might want to load up on additional SD expansion cards for the internal memory is little.

Battery life is incredibly long and outstanding compared to other devices. With backlight set to midlevel, and with constant use, the HP iPaq rx1950 can last for an astounding 9hours and 40 minutes. The device uses a 1,100mAh lithium-ion battery and if users find that not enough, there is a heavier extended power pack which can last up to 15 hours of typical use.

Palm LifeDrive

The Palm LifeDrive is full of features. The PalmOne LifeDrive is larger and noticeably heavier, approximately 4.7 by 2.8 by 0.8 inches; 6.8 ounces, than the company's earlier endeavors. It does not take up alot of space and it looks very stylish. the Life Drive has a 3.7 inch screen which is 320x480 pixel resolutions, and 65,000 colour hues.

The PalmOne LifeDrive is filled to the brim with features, the best, the integrated 4GB Hitachi hard drive. It's the same microdrive as those found in today's MP3 players and digital cameras. There is ample room for all your storage needs. Of the 4GB of available memory, 3.85GB is user accessible. This allows you to carry approximately 1,200 Office documents, 6,000 e-mails, 10,000 appointments, and 10,000 contacts, and on the multimedia side, 300 songs, 1,000 photos, and 2.5 hours of video.

As with the Tungsten T5, you can use the LifeDrive as a USB drive. Just switch to Drive mode and connect the PDA to your PC via the USB cable. All of this functionality is nicely complemented by the device's easy drag-and-drop transfer method and the LifeDrive's Smart File Management, which lets you keep an entire folder's organization and structure, convert photos and videos to formats best suited for the LifeDrive, and select files that you want automatically updated whenever you sync with your computer. In our tests, we moved documents, music, and whole folders between our PC and the device with no problem.

Powering the PalmOne LifeDrive is a 416MHz Intel XScale processor that provides good performance overall but not the best numbers. Like the Tungsten T5 and the Tungsten E2, the LifeDrive shows a noticeable lag in response time when switching between applications and loading any multimedia files.
